Mapping out Standards
The fist activity we completed was mapping out 4th-6th grade science standards. By mapping out the standards we could physically draw connections between standards. It is an easier way of organizing standards based on subject matter and identifiers. Mapping out standards in any grade or subject would be a useful tool for teachers preparing for the school year.
I can Statements
After learning to map out standards, we worked on "I can" statements. I can statements are another useful tool for teachers because they make the goals of each standard more clear. Below I have posted an example of how we moved from an indicator to an "I can" statement.

Other Helpful Materials/ Lessons learned
- The Great Thinkers box, allows students an anonymous way to ask questions they didn't get to ask in class.
- Stoplight at stations, helps teacher see when students are finished with activity or need help.
- Assigned roles shown with different colored clothespins, keeps students organized and makes sure only the students who are supposed to be walking around are. Also helps to keep students on task.
