Scaffold Drawing
In our fourth week, we learned about scaffolding drawing. You start with basic drawings and continue to ask students to draw more complex topics.
We started with something simple. I was given step by step of a cartoon cat.
The next challenge we were given was scaling. When scaling, you draw a grid over the photo you want to recreate, then you draw the photo on a larger or smaller scale depending on the grid you are transferring the photo to.
Our final challenge was a self-portrait. We were given a photo of ourselves taken from the first day of classes, and had to scale it to four 20cm x 20 cm squares.
Drawing is a great tool for teachers. It gives students a way to express what they are learning in a way that makes sense to them, as well as becoming more involved in the lesson. Some students connect to information better if they can draw, so why limit that. Students can also begin to take ownership of their science journals when they are assigned to draw in them.

- Graphically Enhanced Science Notebooks by James Minogue article has great information about how to include drawing and benefits for students.
- Using websites such as Screencast-O-Matic to have students talk about their work while they show it.
